Whats In The Name?

The name of the company was chosen to reflect the areas within which we operate.  Mercia was an ancient Saxon Kingdom defined by King Canute in 1007 and encompassing most of Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, the West Midlands and Worcestershire.  In 1017 Leofric was appointed as the Earl of Mercia and it is his ancient heraldic symbol of the double-headed Eagle surrounded by the outline of the traditional English Oak (Quercus robur) that forms the company logo.  Leofric was a pious and generous man who founded abbeys at both Coventry and Wenlock and he is reputed to have cared greatly for all of his lands and woods.  He was married to the famous, and very daring, Lady Godiva who rode naked through the streets of Coventry to save the townsfolk from paying high taxes.  Leofric died “at a good old age” in 1057 at his estate in Kings Bromley, Staffordshire.  Leofric and his wife Godiva were thoroughly committed to the ancient kingdom of Mercia and it is in this vein of awareness and caring that Mercian Tree Specialists provide their services.

The Individual

Mercian Tree Specialists is solely owned by Mike Hughes, who felled his first tree some 18 years ago and who has maintained his interest in trees and their care ever since.  Over the past 4 years Mike has formalised his interest in trees by pursuing a rigorous training and education programme in all aspects of tree care and surgery.  This has included the achievement of a number of nationally recognised NPTC practical qualifications and he has also undertaken training as an Arboricultural Technician.

Mike left the Army as a Major in the Staffordshire Regiment where he gained extensive experience of training and management particularly in challenging and exciting environments.  Having also worked as a project manager for key equipment programmes he has also gained a variety of planning and management skills.  It is these skills, knowledge and attention to detail that Mike utilises to drive the company forward and make Mercian Tree Specialists stand out from the rest.
